Alkyl & Construction Silanes

Penetrating alkyl silane water repellents and sealant crosslinkers u2014 methyltrimethoxysilane, octyltriethoxysilane, and acetoxy/oxime silanes u2014 for concrete, masonry, and sealant formulation.

Overview

Penetrating alkylalkoxysilane water repellents soak into concrete, brick, andnstone, then hydrolyze and bond to the mineral surface to line pore walls with a hydrophobicnlayer that lowers capillary water uptake. Methyltrimethoxysilane (CAS 1185-55-3) isnthe workhorse small-molecule silane for this; its low molecular weight drives deep penetrationninto dense substrates. Specify a monomeric alkyl silane where penetration depth matters morenthan a surface film, such as vertical concrete facades and bridge decks.

nn

Cure chemistry sets the handling envelope. Methoxysilanes such as methyltrimethoxysilanenreact and condense quickly but release methanol as the byproduct; the ethoxy analog, nmethyltriethoxysilane, cures more slowly and releases ethanol instead. Octyltriethoxysilanencarries a longer C8 alkyl chain for higher water repellency on porous masonry. The trade-offnis real: these silanes need a dry-enough substrate and adequate cure time before waternexposure, so plan application around weather and substrate moisture instead of treating themnas instant-dry.

nn

A second group in this family is built for sealants instead of substrate treatment.nAcetoxysilanes (ethyltriacetoxysilane, methyltriacetoxysilane) act as moisture-curencrosslinkers in RTV silicone sealants and release acetic acid on cure, whilenmethyltris(methylethylketoxime)silane is an oxime crosslinker for lower-corrosivity systems onnsensitive substrates. (3-Chloropropyl)trimethoxysilane is a chloroalkyl coupling silane fornspecialty surface modification. Match the crosslinker to the substrate: choose oxime or alkoxynchemistries where acetic-acid corrosion of metal or concrete is a concern.

Frequently asked questions
What is a penetrating silane water repellent?
A penetrating silane water repellent is a small-molecule alkylalkoxysilane, most often methyltrimethoxysilane, that soaks into a mineral substrate, hydrolyzes, and bonds to the pore walls to make them hydrophobic, lowering capillary water uptake. Because the molecule is small, it penetrates dense concrete more deeply than larger siloxane oligomers or surface film-formers.
What is the difference between methoxy and ethoxy alkyl silanes?
Methoxysilanes such as methyltrimethoxysilane hydrolyze and cure faster and release methanol; ethoxysilanes such as methyltriethoxysilane cure more slowly and release ethanol. Methoxy grades suit faster turnaround; ethoxy grades are chosen where the ethanol byproduct is preferred. Both need a dry substrate and cure time before water exposure.
Why use octyltriethoxysilane instead of a methyl silane?
Octyltriethoxysilane carries a longer C8 alkyl chain, which raises water repellency on porous masonry and improves surface durability. Methyl silanes penetrate dense substrates more deeply. Many systems blend the two to balance penetration depth with surface hydrophobicity. Confirm substrate porosity before selecting a grade.
Which silanes act as sealant crosslinkers?
Acetoxysilanes such as ethyltriacetoxysilane and methyltriacetoxysilane are moisture-cure crosslinkers for RTV silicone sealants and release acetic acid on cure. Methyltris(methylethylketoxime)silane is an oxime crosslinker used where acetic-acid corrosivity toward metal or sensitive substrates is a concern.
