Chelants & Sequestrants

Chelants and sequestrants are water-soluble agents that bind polyvalent metal ions — calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese — into stable, soluble complexes so those ions can no longer form scale, cause staining, or catalyze the breakdown of other actives.

Overview

Chelants and sequestrants are water-soluble agents that bind polyvalent metal ions — calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese — into stable, soluble complexes so those ions can no longer form scale, cause staining, or catalyze the breakdown of other actives. In household, industrial, and institutional (HI&I) cleaning and process-water formulations, they control water hardness, keep metal ions in solution, stabilize bleach and peroxide systems, and raise the efficiency of surfactants and builders. RawSource sources this family in bulk — drums, totes, and container loads — to specification.

Chemistry selection follows the cleaning system. Aminopolycarboxylate chelants — edta-na4/” class=”rs-ov-link”>Tetrasodium EDTA, Disodium EDTA, the parent acid EDTA, and DTPA — form strong complexes with heavy metals across a wide pH range and are used to stabilize hypochlorite and peroxide bleach and to boost detergent performance in laundry and automatic-dishwash formulas. Citric Acid and Sodium Gluconate are carboxylate chelants suited to acidic descalers, with gluconate holding sequestering activity in the strongly alkaline conditions of bottle-wash and clean-in-place (CIP) cleaners. Phosphonates — HEDP (etidronic acid), ATMP and ATMP-Na5, DTPMP·Na5 and DTPMP·Na7, and BHMTPMPA — provide threshold scale inhibition, deposit control, and bleach stabilization with good thermal and hydrolytic stability. Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) and Sodium Hexametaphosphate (SHMP) act as detergent builders and water softeners, while Acrylic Acid/AMPS copolymer (AA/AMPS) disperses scale and helps prevent soil redeposition, often paired with the phosphonates.
