EDTA, citrate, gluconate, and HEDP chelating agents that sequester calcium, magnesium, and iron to protect surfactant performance and inhibit scale in cleaning formulations.
Chelants (also called sequestrants) are molecules that bind metal ions — calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper — into stable, soluble complexes so those ions cannot interfere with cleaning. In hard-water and industrial cleaning they protect surfactant performance, prevent scale and lime-soap deposits, and stabilize bleach and enzymes against trace-metal attack. The common chemistries are EDTA salts, citrate, gluconate, and the phosphonate HEDP.
The central trade-off is binding strength versus environmental fate. Tetrasodium EDTA is the strongest broad-spectrum chelant and works across a wide pH range, but it resists biodegradation and faces growing regulatory scrutiny; confirm regulatory status for your application and jurisdiction. Citric acid and sodium gluconate cost less and break down more readily in conventional treatment, but bind fewer metals and are pH-limited. Choose by both performance and your formulation's discharge targets.
Match the chelant to pH. Sodium gluconate is the standout for alkaline clean-in-place (CIP) and bottle-wash above pH 10, where many chelants fail; citric acid works at acidic descaling pH and doubles as a descaler; HEDP adds threshold scale inhibition at low dose, holding back calcium carbonate even below stoichiometric levels. For broad metal capture across pH, tetrasodium or disodium EDTA remains the reference.
