Physical Properties
Physical Description
Zinc nitrate is a colorless crystalline solid. Noncombustible, but accelerates the burning of combustible materials. If large quantities are involved in a fire or the combustible material is finely divided, an explosion may result. Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may result in an explosion. Toxic oxides of nitrogen are produced in fires involving this material. It is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of other chemicals, in medicine, and in dyes

Full Description

Zinc nitrate (CAS 7779-88-6) is a water-soluble zinc salt and strong oxidizer. It is used as a mordant in textile dyeing, as a catalyst in chemical manufacture, as a latex coagulant, and as a zinc source in liquid fertilizers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for zinc nitrate?

Anhydrous zinc nitrate is Zn(NO3)2 (CAS 7779-88-6); the common hexahydrate is Zn(NO3)2·6H2O. The zinc ion carries a 2+ charge and each nitrate a 1- charge, giving two nitrates per zinc.

Why is zinc nitrate Zn(NO3)2?

Zinc forms a 2+ cation and nitrate is a 1- anion, so charge balance requires two nitrate ions for each zinc ion, written Zn(NO3)2. The parentheses indicate the nitrate group is taken twice.

What is zinc nitrate used for?

Industrial uses include a mordant in textile dyeing, a catalyst in chemical manufacture, a latex coagulant, a zinc source in liquid fertilizers, and a reagent or intermediate in synthesis. Note it is a strong oxidizer and should be handled per its SDS.

Is zinc nitrate water soluble?

Yes. Zinc nitrate is a highly water-soluble zinc salt, which supports its use in liquid fertilizers, dye baths, and latex coagulation. It is also a strong oxidizer; consult the SDS for handling.

How does zinc nitrate ship under DOT?

Zinc nitrate is assigned UN 1514 (Zinc nitrate), an oxidizer, and ships as regulated dangerous goods with appropriate packaging and documentation. RawSource provides the SDS and bulk quotes; confirm shipping requirements for your destination.
