Full Description

Polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA; CAS 51274-37-4) is a phosphorus-free, readily biodegradable scale and corrosion inhibitor for water treatment. It is a non-nitrogen, non-phosphorus polycarboxylate that controls carbonate, sulfate and silica scale and inhibits corrosion, and it keeps working in the hardest, highest-pH, highest-alkalinity cooling water where many inhibitors fail — the reason it is chosen for high-cycle and discharge-restricted systems.

What is polyepoxysuccinic acid?

PESA is a low-molecular-weight polyether-polycarboxylic acid (usually supplied as the sodium salt solution). It works by threshold inhibition and crystal distortion — adsorbing onto scale nuclei at a few ppm so they cannot grow into adherent deposits — and it chelates calcium with unusually high tolerance. Because it contains no phosphorus and no nitrogen and is recognized as readily biodegradable, it is specified where phosphate discharge is limited.

Applications by sector

Cooling water. A scale and corrosion inhibitor for recirculating cooling systems, effective at high cycles of concentration, high pH and high hardness. Reverse osmosis & desalination. An antiscalant for membrane systems. Oilfield & industrial water. Scale control in produced and process water, and in boilers and field water systems. It is frequently blended with other inhibitors and dispersants; dose to your water chemistry and verify by residual testing.

Forms and grades

Supplied as an aqueous solution at a stated active content (typically as the sodium salt); confirm active level on the RFQ. The CoA documents the lot.

Handling and documentation

Handle per the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS); each lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PESA used for?

Polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA, CAS 51274-37-4) is a phosphorus-free scale and corrosion inhibitor for cooling water, reverse-osmosis and oilfield/industrial water, especially effective at high pH, high hardness and high cycles of concentration.

Why choose PESA over phosphonates?

PESA contains no phosphorus and no nitrogen and is recognized as readily biodegradable, so it is chosen where phosphate discharge is restricted, and it tolerates higher hardness and pH than many phosphonates. Evaluate performance against your specific water chemistry.

Is PESA biodegradable?

It is recognized as readily biodegradable and is phosphorus-free, which is why it is used in environmentally restricted programs. Confirm any specific classification against the SDS for your jurisdiction.

What is the CAS of PESA?

Polyepoxysuccinic acid is CAS 51274-37-4. As a polymer it is supplied as an aqueous solution at a stated active content; the CoA documents each lot.

How is bulk PESA supplied and quoted?

RawSource supplies it as an aqueous solution in bulk with CoA and SDS per lot. Pricing is quote-based on active level and volume; submit an RFQ with your target quantity.
