Full Description

Polymeric MDI (PMDI) is the workhorse aromatic polyisocyanate for rigid polyurethane foam, adhesives and binders — a multifunctional methylene-diphenyl isocyanate used in huge volume. Identity: CAS 9016-87-9.

What it is

Polymeric MDI (CAS 9016-87-9) is a brown liquid mixture of MDI oligomers with an average functionality above two. It is the standard isocyanate for rigid foam and many binder systems.

How it works

Its multiple NCO groups react with polyols (and water, for blow) to build the rigid, highly crosslinked polyurethane/polyisocyanurate network of insulation foam; it also bonds well as a binder and adhesive. It is paired with amine and trimerization catalysts.

Applications

PMDI is used in rigid PU/PIR insulation foam, wood binders (OSB/particleboard), foundry and adhesive systems, with catalysts such as those in the PU catalysts guide.

Forms, grades and handling

PMDI is supplied as a brown liquid in drums, IBCs and bulk; moisture-protected. Properties are typical reference values; the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for the lot you buy governs. Isocyanates are moisture-sensitive and require respiratory/skin precautions; handle per the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Each lot ships with CoA, TDS and SDS.

Bulk supply and RFQ

RawSource sources Polymeric MDI direct from producers in bulk, with CoA, TDS and SDS per lot. Tell us your binder system, cure schedule and the performance you need, and we will quote the right grade. See the polyurethane catalysts guide for the catalysts that drive these reactions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is polymeric MDI (PMDI) used for?

Polymeric MDI (PMDI, CAS 9016-87-9) is the workhorse aromatic polyisocyanate for rigid polyurethane/PIR insulation foam, wood binders (OSB/particleboard), foundry and adhesive systems, reacting with polyols and catalysts.

How is bulk polymeric MDI supplied and quoted?

RawSource supplies polymeric MDI in bulk with CoA, TDS and SDS per lot. Pricing is quote-based on grade and volume; submit an RFQ with your binder system and cure schedule.

What is the REACH and TSCA regulatory status of Polymeric MDI (PMDI)?

Polymeric MDI (PMDI) (CAS 9016-87-9) is subject to U.S. TSCA Inventory requirements; supplying it into the EU requires valid REACH registration ((EC) No 1907/2006). RawSource cannot verify a third-party supplier's registrations — buyers should require documented TSCA and REACH compliance for their jurisdiction and volume (EC 500-079-6).
