Full Description

Glyceryl monooleate (glyceryl oleate, GMO; INCI Glyceryl Oleate; CAS 25496-72-4) is the monoester of glycerol and oleic acid — a nonionic, oil-loving (low-HLB) emulsifier, emollient and lubricant. Its single polar head on a long unsaturated tail makes it a water-in-oil emulsifier and co-emulsifier, a slip and anti-fog additive in plastics, and a lubricity and corrosion-inhibiting additive in industrial fluids. Identity: PubChem.

What is glyceryl monooleate?

It is a monoglyceride — glycerol esterified with one oleic acid chain. The free hydroxyls give a small polar head and the oleyl chain a large lipophilic tail, so the HLB is low (roughly 3–4) and the molecule sits at oil/water interfaces and oil/air interfaces. That surface activity, plus the kink of the unsaturated oleate, is what makes it a versatile emulsifier, dispersant and boundary lubricant. The food-grade mono-/di-glyceride is a separate specification.

Applications by sector

Personal care. A water-in-oil emulsifier and co-emulsifier, emollient and pigment dispersant in creams, balms and color cosmetics. Plastics & polymers. An anti-fog and antistatic additive and internal lubricant/slip agent for films and molded parts. Industrial. A lubricity additive, corrosion inhibitor and emulsifier in metalworking fluids, fuels and lubricants, and a co-component in defoamers. Food (food grade). An emulsifier in food systems under the relevant monograph. These are functional roles, not health claims; match the grade to the application.

Forms and grades

Supplied as an amber oily liquid to soft paste, in technical/industrial and food grades and at varying monoester content. Specify grade and monoester level on the RFQ; the CoA documents the lot.

Handling and documentation

Each lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA); request the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for handling and physical-property data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is glyceryl monooleate used for?

Glyceryl monooleate (GMO, CAS 25496-72-4) is a low-HLB nonionic emulsifier and emollient used as a water-in-oil emulsifier and co-emulsifier in personal care, an anti-fog/antistatic and slip additive in plastics, and a lubricity and corrosion-inhibiting emulsifier in industrial fluids; a food grade is also available.

Is glyceryl monooleate the same as glyceryl oleate?

Yes — Glyceryl Oleate is the INCI name for glyceryl monooleate (GMO), the monoester of glycerol and oleic acid.

Is glyceryl monooleate water or oil soluble?

It is oil-soluble and water-dispersible, with a low HLB (~3–4), which is why it works as a water-in-oil emulsifier and an interface-active additive rather than a water-soluble surfactant.

What is the CAS and formula of glyceryl monooleate?

It is CAS 25496-72-4 (PubChem CID 5283468), molecular formula C21H40O4. The CoA documents grade and monoester content.

How is bulk glyceryl monooleate supplied and quoted?

RawSource supplies it in bulk with CoA and SDS per lot. Pricing is quote-based on grade and volume; submit an RFQ with your target quantity and ship-to.
