Full Description

Silicone Oil 500 cSt is a medium-heavy linear PDMS (dimethicone) fluid that sits between the 350 cSt grade and the 1000 cSt grade. It lays down a thicker, more persistent, more lubricating film than the 200–350 cSt fluids while still remaining pourable and pumpable, which makes it the grade formulators reach for when a 200 cSt film is not substantive enough but a 1000 cSt fluid is too heavy to handle conveniently. It keeps the PDMS family’s thermal stability, low surface tension and dielectric strength.

Typical Properties

The values below describe the nominal 500 cSt grade. They are typical values, not a specification; the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for the lot you purchase governs.

Property Typical Value
INCI Name Dimethicone

Appearance Clear, colorless liquid
Viscosity (25 °C) ~500 cSt
Specific gravity (25 °C) ~0.970
Refractive index (25 °C) ~1.403
Solubility Insoluble in water; soluble in many organic solvents
Flammability / handling Refer to the current SDS

Applications

In release and lubrication, the heavier 500 cSt film gives more durable mold release for difficult demolds and a longer-lasting slip and processing aid in rubber and plastics. In polishes and protectants, it builds a deeper, longer-wearing gloss and water-beading film than the lighter grades. It serves as a dielectric and insulating fluid and a light mechanical damping fluid where a more viscous medium is wanted. In textile and leather treatment, it is used as a softening and lubricating finish. In personal-care formulation, 500 cSt delivers heavier, more substantive conditioning and gloss — typically used at low percentages alongside lighter fluids — a formulation-feel role, not a skin-health claim. It also functions as an antifoam base oil for more persistent defoamer systems.

Where 500 cSt sits on the ladder

Below 500 cSt are 350, 200 and 100 cSt, which spread faster and leave a lighter film; above it are 1000, 5000 and 10000 cSt, which are progressively more viscous and more persistent and shift toward damping and high-film duty. 500 cSt is the practical step up from the mid-range when you need more substance without moving to a hard-to-pump fluid. The silicone oil viscosity guide walks the full ladder grade by grade.

Grades & bulk sourcing

RawSource supplies Silicone Oil 500 cSt in drums, totes and IBCs, with bulk quantities held in domestic US stock for short lead times. Every lot ships with a CoA, and the SDS is available on request. Confirm the grade for your application before you commit a production run — match viscosity to the spreading, persistence and film weight your formulation needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does cSt mean in silicone oil?

cSt is centistokes, the unit of kinematic viscosity. For silicone oil (PDMS, CAS 9006-65-9) it indicates how thin or thick the fluid is; 500 cSt is a medium-heavy grade.

What is silicone oil 500 cSt used for?

It is used where a medium-heavy silicone film is needed: durable mold release and slip for rubber and plastics, longer-wearing gloss in polishes, dielectric and light damping fluid duty, textile/leather softening, and substantive conditioning in personal-care formulation. Match the grade to your application.

How does silicone oil 500 cSt differ from the 350 and 1000 cSt grades?

All three share CAS 9006-65-9 and differ only in chain length and viscosity. 500 cSt lays down a more substantive, more persistent film than 350 cSt and spreads more readily than 1000 cSt. Step down to 350 cSt for faster spread and a lighter film; step up to 1000 cSt for a heavier, longer-lasting film.

What is the CAS number for silicone oil 500 cSt?

Silicone oil (dimethicone, PDMS) carries CAS 9006-65-9 with the repeating-unit formula (C2H6OSi)n. The 500 cSt label is the viscosity grade, not a separate CAS; all dimethicone viscosity grades share this number.

Can silicone oil 500 cSt be supplied in bulk?

Yes. RawSource supplies 500 cSt silicone oil in drum, tote, and IBC quantities from domestic US stock. Request a bulk quote with your target volume and packaging; CoA and SDS are available on request.
