Full Description

Squalane (INCI Squalane; CAS 111-01-3) is a saturated, branched C30 hydrocarbon emollient. As the fully hydrogenated, oxidatively stable form of squalene, it is a light, non-greasy, fast-absorbing emollient with high skin compatibility — a premium skin and hair emollient available from plant (sugarcane/olive) and synthetic sources. Identity: PubChem.

What is squalane?

Squalane is the saturated counterpart of squalene: hydrogenating squalene removes the double bonds that make squalene prone to oxidation, leaving a stable, colorless, odorless branched hydrocarbon. It gives a light, cushioned-yet-dry feel, spreads well and is highly compatible with skin lipids and other oils. It is produced from plant sources (sugarcane, olive) and synthetically; the source is documented per grade.

Applications by sector

Skin care. A light, fast-absorbing emollient that softens and improves slip in serums, oils, creams and balms. Hair care. A non-greasy shine and conditioning oil. Color cosmetics & sun care. An emollient carrier and feel modifier. These describe emollient feel and behavior, not skin-health claims; the plant/synthetic origin is a sourcing fact, not an environmental claim.

Forms and grades

Supplied as a clear liquid in plant-derived (sugarcane/olive) and synthetic grades; specify the source and grade on the RFQ. The CoA documents each lot.

Handling and documentation

Each lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA); request the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for handling data.

Bulk supply and RFQ

RawSource supplies squalane in bulk to personal-care formulators, with CoA and SDS per lot. Submit an RFQ with your source (plant/synthetic), grade and target quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is squalane used for?

Squalane (CAS 111-01-3) is a light, fast-absorbing emollient used in skin serums, oils and creams, as a non-greasy shine/conditioning agent in hair care, and as an emollient carrier in color cosmetics and sun care.

What is the difference between squalane and squalene?

Squalane is the fully saturated (hydrogenated) form of squalene. Removing squalene’s double bonds makes squalane oxidatively stable and shelf-stable, which is why cosmetics use squalane rather than the readily oxidized squalene.

Is squalane plant-based?

It is available from plant sources (sugarcane, olive) and from synthetic routes. The source is a sourcing/grade fact documented on the CoA; specify which you need on the RFQ.

What is the CAS and formula of squalane?

It is CAS 111-01-3 (PubChem CID 8089), molecular formula C30H62. The CoA documents source and grade.

How is bulk squalane supplied and quoted?

RawSource supplies plant-derived and synthetic squalane in bulk with CoA and SDS per lot. Pricing is quote-based on source, grade and volume; submit an RFQ with your target quantity.
