PEPA is used both as an additive intumescent flame retardant and, more commonly, as an intermediate – its single hydroxyl group lets chemists graft it onto or condense it into oligomeric and polymeric halogen-free flame retardants. The high phosphorus content and strong char-forming tendency of the bicyclic cage make it attractive for plastics, intumescent coatings and textile finishes where halogen-free fire performance and low smoke are the goal.
