Flotation Frothers

Alcohol and polyglycol frothers u2014 MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and polypropylene glycol u2014 for controlled bubble size and froth stability in flotation circuits.

Overview

Flotation frothers are surfactants that control bubble size and frothnstability in a flotation cell, so mineral-laden bubbles form, rise, and carry concentrateninto the launder without collapsing or over-stabilizing. Unlike collectors, nfrothers do not make minerals hydrophobic; they manage the air/water interface. Choosenthe frother by the froth behavior you need, then set dose by froth depth and texturenrather than a fixed concentration.

nn

Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) is the most widely used alcohol frother. It produces anrelatively brittle, fast-breaking froth that drains gangue well and is easy to control, nwhich is why it is the default for many sulfide circuits. The trade-off: that brittlenfroth has less carrying capacity than a stronger frother, so coarse or high-mass loadsncan drop back. Dose MIBC to the froth, not to a fixed ppm.

nn

Polypropylene glycol (PPG) and other polyglycol frothers give a more stable,nhigher-carrying froth that holds coarse particles and tolerates variable feed. The costnis selectivity: a persistent froth can pull more gangue and is harder to break inndownstream cleaning. Many plants blend an alcohol frother with a polyglycol to tune frothnstrength to the ore. Start from a single frother and add the second only when the frothnneeds more stability.

Where it's used
  • Sulfide mineral flotation requiring controllable, fast-draining froth (MIBC)
  • Coarse-particle and high-mass flotation needing higher froth carrying capacity (polyglycol frothers)
  • Frother blending to tune froth stability to variable or changing ore feed
  • Rougher, scavenger, and cleaner stages with stage-specific froth requirements
  • Circuits where selective gangue rejection depends on a brittle, well-draining froth
Frequently asked questions
What does a frother do in flotation?
A frother is a surfactant that controls bubble size and stabilizes the froth so mineral-laden bubbles rise and carry concentrate into the launder. Unlike a collector, it does not make minerals hydrophobic; it manages the air/water interface and froth structure. Frother type and dose set how stable, brittle, or high-carrying the froth is.
What is the difference between an alcohol frother and a polyglycol frother?
Alcohol frothers such as MIBC produce a brittle, fast-breaking froth that drains gangue well and is easy to control, which favors selectivity. Polyglycol frothers such as polypropylene glycol give a more stable, higher-carrying froth that holds coarse particles and tolerates variable feed, at the cost of carrying more gangue. Many circuits blend the two to tune froth strength.
Can frothers be blended?
Yes. Blending an alcohol frother with a polyglycol is common practice to set froth strength between brittle/selective and stable/high-carrying. A practical approach is to start from a single frother and add the second only when the froth needs more stability or carrying capacity. Confirm the blend and dose against your ore and circuit by test work.
Does RawSource supply MIBC and polyglycol frothers in bulk?
Yes. RawSource sources MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and polypropylene glycol (PPG) polyglycol frothers in bulk quantities for flotation circuits, with SDS, TDS, and COA documentation on every shipment. Share your mineral system, circuit stages, and volume for a bulk RFQ.
