Chelator choice follows pH and environmental positioning. Tetrasodium EDTA is alkaline, disodium EDTA sits near neutral, and both are strong, broad-spectrum, and inexpensive. Sodium gluconate and phytic acid are the milder, sugar- and plant-derived chelators formulators specify for natural-positioned formulas. The genuine trade-off: the EDTA salts give the strongest, most reliable sequestration but resist environmental degradation and face growing regulatory scrutiny, whereas gluconate and phytic acid bind fewer metals and are more pH-sensitive.
The pH adjusters carry their own constraint. Triethanolamine and tromethamine neutralize carbomer and acrylic thickeners, but triethanolamine is restricted in several markets, with a concentration cap and a prohibition on use in nitrosating systems. State that as a formulation fact, select a neutralizer accordingly, and confirm regulatory status for your application and jurisdiction. Every role here is a function, not a benefit claim.
