Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is the workhorse alkali for raising pH. It ships as beads or as 50% liquid; the 50% solution starts to freeze near 12 C, so sites that store outdoors in cold climates often specify beads or a diluted strength. Sodium carbonate (soda ash) raises pH more gradually and adds buffering, which suits operators who want to avoid the overshoot a strong base can cause. Specify soda ash where fine control matters more than speed.
On the acid side, sulfuric acid is the lower-cost choice per unit of neutralizing capacity and the default for large-volume pH reduction. Hydrochloric acid is chosen when added sulfate would feed downstream sulfate scaling or interfere with a process. Both are strong mineral acids that demand compatible metallurgy and metered dosing. Match the acid to the water chemistry, not to price alone, because the wrong anion can create a scaling problem the pH correction was meant to prevent.
