Os óleos básicos são a principal fração de matéria-prima de praticamente todo lubrificante e fluido de corte solúvel em água — normalmente de 70 a 95 por cento da mistura final — e são eles que carregam o pacote de aditivos responsável pela proteção. Na manufatura industrial, eles se dividem em três tipos de trabalho: óleos minerais parafínicos, óleos naftênicos e polialfaolefinas sintéticas (PAO). O óleo base define a viscosidade, o poder de solvência para os aditivos e o comportamento oxidativo e térmico do fluido acabado.
Paraffinic mineral oils, such as a 90-viscosity stock, are the default carrier for general lubricants and soluble cutting fluids because they balance cost, viscosity, and additive response. Naphthenic oils carry a lower pour point and dissolve additives and metal soaps more readily, which makes them useful in soluble metalworking concentrates and in fluids that must stay clear at low temperature. Choose naphthenic where solvency and low-temperature behavior matter more than oxidation life.
Polyalphaolefin is the synthetic option. It gives a higher viscosity index, better oxidation stability, and a wider service-temperature range than mineral stock, which extends drain intervals in demanding lubricants. The trade-off is cost: PAO runs several times the price of a paraffinic base oil, so it is specified where service life or temperature span justifies the spend, not as a drop-in for commodity fluids. Blend it with esters when additive solubility needs a lift.
