They dissolve a wide range of resins and flash off quickly, which largely sets a coating's dry-to-touch time. Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, CAS 78-93-3) is the benchmark fast ketone; acetone (CAS 67-64-1) evaporates faster still and doubles as a cleanup solvent. Match evaporation rate to the application method: spray lines tolerate faster solvents than brush or roller work, where a fast solvent can leave before the film levels.
The trade-off is real. A faster solvent gives quicker handling and an earlier hard film, but it can also cause solvent pop, blush in humid air, or poor flow if it evaporates before the coating levels. Slower esters such as n-butyl acetate (CAS 123-86-4) are blended in to restore leveling and gloss; ethyl acetate (CAS 141-78-6) sits between the two. Build a solvent blend across evaporation rates rather than relying on one fast solvent, and adjust the blend for shop temperature and humidity.
Mesityl oxide (CAS 141-79-7) is a high-solvency ketone reserved for difficult resins, and butanol (CAS 71-36-3) is an alcohol co-solvent that aids flow and coalescence. Specify the high-solvency grades only where standard ketones fall short, since they cost more and evaporate slower. Every solvent in this family is flammable and should be stored, handled, and ventilated according to its safety data sheet and local fire code.
