Where cost or a softer slip matters more than wash durability, plain dimethicone (PDMS, CAS 9006-65-9) emulsions deliver lubricity and surface smoothness at lower price than the amino grades. The functional split is straightforward: amino silicones bond to the fiber and survive washing, while non-functional dimethicone sits on the surface and gives the slickest initial hand. Blend the two when a finish needs both a premium hand and laundering durability.
The honest trade-off with amino silicones is hydrophilicity and shade. Their durable hand comes at the cost of water absorbency, and the amine can yellow on heat-setting or with certain dyes. Where the fabric must wick u2014 activewear and performance synthetics u2014 a polyether-modified trisiloxane (CAS 27306-78-1) gives a softer, more hydrophilic finish and acts as a super-wetter, trading some of that signature dry hand for moisture management. Choose the chemistry by end use, not by hand alone.
